The micro SD (secure digital) memory card is one of the popularly known types of the memory cards – it is removable and uses flash memory to store your digital data in it. The micro SD memory card (formerly known as T-flash) was introduced by the Sandisk in 2004. This was declared as world’s smallest memory card due to its extremely tiny size, of a finger nail approximately (one quarter of the size of the standard SD card). This need to produce the smallest memory card was due to the revolution of mobile phone industry. This cell phone evolution initiated the cause of manufacturing micro sd memory cards and out of which, Motorola was the first one to adapt the micro SD memory cards standard in their mobile phones. Besides the mobile phones, the micro SD cards are also used in many other electronic gadgets such as portable media players, Nintendo SD and digital cameras etc.

As per its data storage capacities, the micro sd memory cards come up with different storage capacities ranging from 16 MB to 4 GB. As per their file format system, they have fat 16 file format and besides that, they have got the byte addressing for data storage purposes. The micro SD card can be used in full sized MMC and SD slots, through an adapter and these show backward compatibility (i.e. these can be used in the place of the standard sd memory cards via an adapter). This very reason is another cause of its increased extensive use.

One of the most important factor that one must scrutinize over before buying the micro SD memory card is that make sure you do not confuse it with the micro SDHC cards though these both have similar format but the SDHC card is not found to be compatible with those devices which are specifically intended for the micro SD cards. If you are unsure about the micro SD memory cards and the micro SDHC memory cards, then do not forget to look up on the internet for a little description that can help you identify, before buying or you could get in contact with a retailer online/offline.
