All functions of a computer are being done at the Central Processing Unit (CPU), the main hardware.  It is where the hardware peripherals are connected or plugged into.  The peripherals are like the keyboard, mouse and web cam.  Inside the CPU is where you would find the motherboard where the processor and other electronic parts are connected.  Parts that are plugged on to the motherboard are the hard drive, CD/DVD player, card reader, floppy drive and cooling fans.  It has sockets where Random Access Memory (RAM) card and video cards are inserted into them.  All those are basically the computer hardware that also includes the power supply unit.

Some computers have other hardware for special use or purpose.  Others use two hard drives for larger storage or back-up purposes.  There are also those that would have built in wi-fi or modems for easy connection to the internet.  Latest models of laptops, notebooks and netbooks are wi-fi ready with webcams and microphones built in along with the keyboard and mouse.  In addition to these portable computers, they would have rechargeable batteries that could last anywhere from two hours and up.

The important parts of computer hardware would be those that help in processing speed and storage.  For speed it would be the processor and RAM.  The latest processors for speed are dual and quad cores.  There could be newer ones with higher processing speed to this.  RAM cards can now be four gigabytes or higher.  On storage, it will be the hard drive.  Regular hard drives now have capacities of 300 gigabytes or higher.  You can also add an external hard drive for more storage capacity.
